Due to the expense of the AFA Workshops, people who fail to attend without the courtesy of notification will be placed on the waiting list for future workshops. As many districts have requirements for professional development, AFA workshops have long waiting lists due to limited space.

1A Using the TryScience Web site to make science come alive; presented by Joe Menchaca, IBM Corp., Dayton, OH
Bring science alive for children, parents and teachers by introducing them to the interactive activities on www.tryscience.org. TryScience brings the science center experience online for children aged 8-12, with hands-on and online activities. TryScience presentations engage audiences in science and inform them about science resources on the Internet and at science museums worldwide.
1B Rescue Mission; presented by Judith Wehn, Chief, Education Div., National Museum of the U.S. Air Force
Participants will learn about helicopters and the four forces of flight. They will apply their knowledge through a hands-on activity. This team activity reinforces how to chart coordinates on a graph, data entry on a spreadsheet, probability skills and helicopter crew coordination.

2A Empowering young people to be safe on the Internet; presented by Dan Brandmeyer, IBM Corp., Dayton, OH
Keeping young people safe on the Internet is a global concern, yet many adults are unaware of the many evolving and complex issues involved. "Internet safety for kids" includes basic information – provided by the i-SAFE America Foundation, Inc. – on how adults can empower young people to be safe on the Internet. Presentation targeted at adult audiences to introduce the topic of online safety for children. Content includes Resources and tips handouts, which provides referrals to expert resources for more information.
2B Geodesy: The Dynamic Earth; presented by Andrew Shepherd, Riverside Research Institute, Beavercreek, OH
The study of math and science is vital for the efficient function of modern society. The module, “Geodesy: The Dynamic Earth”, provides an introduction to geodetic studies with special emphasis on inquiry based mathematics and physics principles which coincide with interactive lesson plans. Special attention will be given to inquiry based learning techniques, 3D interactive graphical modeling activities, and instructor resources. This workshop demonstrates one module in a broad STEM course developed for The STEM Center in Dayton, Ohio by Riverside Research Institute.
