1A: Words Can Lie, Body Language Doesn’t! – Body Language 101
Presented by:
HOW YOU MOVE SPEAKS VOLUMES! When is the best time to shake someone’s hand? How close should you stand to someone while conversing? Where’s the best place to sit during a meeting? Research shows that a person makes up their mind about you in the first tenth of a second. This session will show you how to move with confidence, focusing on sending positive body messages to your students, parents and associates while picking up on their subtle body cues, allowing you to share your message more effectively and efficiently.
YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE THAT FIRST IMPRESSION!
1B: Glide Right Presented by: Krista Gerhardt, WOW! Program Coordinator, WPAFB Educational Outreach & AERO Wizard Col. Ronald J. Stauffer, AFRL Aeronautical Engineer
Session participants will not only construct a flying model glider, they will use science, mathematics, and process skills to determine the weight and balance of their glider. Join us as we learn how to change the flight characteristics of our model glider.
1C: Smart Board for Elementary Science Applications
Presented by: Angela Riethman with assistance from Jason Streiff and Connie Jensen; Starbase WPAFB
Session 2 Workshops 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

2A: Take Flight! Presented by: Judith A. Wehn, Chief, Education Division National Museum of the U.S. Air Force
Join us for this hands-on aviation workshop! Teachers will build and test a rise-off-ground rubber band powered airplane. This airplane then becomes the “vehicle” to teach about force and motion, potential/kinetic energy and centripetal force. Mathematics extensions include determining average speed and distance flown. Teachers will discover how these high interest activities build an enduring understanding of science for their middle school students. Safety fly zones will be addressed and participants will wear eye protection. This workshop is based on the Aero Lab curriculum developed by the Academy for Model Aeronautics.
2B: Magic or Science: “Once you know what the Magician knows it is no longer magic”
Presented by: Tim Pinkerton, Beavercreek City Schools, 2009 AFA Local & State Teacher of the Year and Janet Barnard, Troy City Schools, 2010 AFA Local & State Teacher of the Year
A Discrepant Event is something that surprises, startles, puzzles, or astonishes the observer just like magic. Often, a discrepant event is one that does not appear to follow basic “rules of nature” and the outcome of a discrepant event is unexpected or contrary to what one would have predicted. The event throws the observer "off balance" intellectually which most likely will motivate them to further investigate the science concept.
Be prepared to have fun!
Come learn how you can use discrepant events as a low-cost way to excite your students to learn how to think like a scientist. As an added plus, some of “Tim’s Favorite” activities will also be shown.
2C: Smart Board for Jr./Sr. High Science Applications
Presented by: Jason Streiff with assistance from Angela Riethman and Connie Jensen; Starbase WPAFB
